Las Torres de Quart

As you may recall, there is a large castle/tower just across the street form my apartment building. This cool structure is called Las Torres de Quart, which is Valencian for the Towers of Quart. The first time I heard the name I thought it was Toros, which caused a little confusion. There is another set of towers to the north of the old part of the city called Las Torres de Serrano, which I will try to see tomorrow. They are free to walk up on Sundays and holidays. Since Thursday was a Valencian holiday to celebrate one of the Saints of the city, I decided to check out the Quart.

The steps up the side.

The first landing with more steps.

View from about halfway up.

These stairs were remarkably unsafe. There was no hand rail or anything, just steep stone steps on a spiral staircase. I've noticed that a lot of the parks and monuments in Spain tend to be a bit more dangerous that what you would find in the US.

The view from the top.

That would be a nice place to chill.

I think that blue dome is one of the big market buildings.

The tall tower in the middle is the bell tower of the Metropolitan Cathedral–Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady of Valencia, also known as Saint Mary's Cathedral.

Not a bad view.

More sketchy stairs.

I live on the floor second from the top and it's the one with the window shades up.

The base.

Sweet hole in the middle you can look down through once you climb up.

Botanical Garden

Sunday was a pretty slow day with nothing on my schedule, so I took my free time to visit the botanical gardens of Valencia. It only cost me about two euros to get in and the garden itself is practically in my backyard.

The blue star is where I live and that red arrow is pointing right at the gardens. The red star is my school and the red square is the soccer stadium. As you can see, it is only a few blocks away. It is a pretty large tract of land that is full of plants, trees, bushes, cacti, and more. They have all kinds of vegetation from all over the world. The University of Valencia does some botanical research there as well.

The entrance to the gardens has a rather large hole in the roof and there are plants and trees growing right in the middle of the building.

Valenciano, Español, and English.

Benches everywhere for relaxation.

The main building.

There were stray cats all over this place. Probably dozens of them. I guess they liked chasing after all the birds that were also running around.
